The Primera División of the Professional Football League is commonly known as La Liga or Liga BBVA and it's the top professional soccer league in Spain.
It is contested by 20 teams, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Segunda División ( also know as Liga Adelante ) and replaced by the top three teams in that division.
During the course of a season, which lasts from September to June, each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 games.
Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss: the top four teams in La Liga qualify for the UEFA Champions League , with the first and second placed teams directly entering the group stage and the third and fourth placed teams entering the third qualifying round.
The fifth and sixth placed teams qualify for the first round of the UEFA Europa League .
The Copa del Rey is an annual cup competition for Spanish football teams: teams from upper and lower divisions will get to play against each other and the winner qualify for both the Supercopa de España ( Spanish Supercup ) and the UEFA Europa League the following season.
