The American Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top-flight professional soccer league in the United States and Canada with 14 professional soccer teams, 13 in the U.S. and one in Canada.
MLS represents the top tier of the American and Canadian soccer pyramids: seasons run from late March or early April to November, with teams playing about 30 regular season games each: the 14 teams in the league are divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences, each with seven teams.
Eight teams from the league compete in the post-season MLS Cup Playoffs, which culminate in MLS Cup.
MLS has three automatic berths for US teams in the CONCACAF Champions League  with extra berths possible via the U.S. Open Cup with the sole qualification for Canadian teams coming via the Canadian Championship .
At a second level
of the soccer pyramid there is the the United Soccer Leagues (USL): it is consist of the USL First Division, the USL Second Division and the Premier Development League (PDL).
The USL structure allows for the Second Division champion to be promoted to the First Division, provided that the team to be promoted meets criteria set by USL and U.S. Soccer, and space exists: there is no promotion or relegation between MLS and USL.
